The steam turbine is then a back pressure turbine, and serves the purpose of lowering the pressure against which the wells will have to produce. The back pressure of the steam turbine has to be higher than atmospheric pressure to facilitate easy disposal of the non-condensable gas, but still low enough to allow wells with lower wellhead pressure to be connected.
