Satellite imagery A suite of Landsat 7 satellite images (“scenes”) covering the prospective NANA area was requested from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) by the author on January 25, 2008. As of the writing of this report, these scenes have not arrived. Information from these scenes may help by determining the lateral extent of known geothermal areas and/or identifying concealed geothermal areas. Some hot springs, such Pilgrim Hot Springs, has an approximately two square mile “thawed zone”; an area of warm soil, dense underbrush and tall cottonwoods “seemingly out of place within the ...frozen soil and stunted vegetation in the surrounding subarctic tundra” (Dilley, 2007). This sort of feature should be visible in high-resolution satellite images. On the other hand, most hot spring areas in the CAHSB have a small footprint, and could be “invisible” on most satellite images.
