series is probably useful for detecting high-temperature or laterally extensive geothermal resources, low temperature resources may go undetected. Local knowledge and other data 1. Kotzebue There is an oral tradition that claims that hot fluid was once encountered at 300 ft. depth beneath the city of Kotzebue. The water was reportedly found during foundation work for a hospital (?) in the 1950’s. Interviews should be conducted with Kotzebue area residents to verify these claims, and collect data if it exists. 2. Inmachuk Hot Springs This author has heard mention of an area called Inmachuk hot springs, but has not been able to locate the site or find any data to date. The springs are reportedly ~30 miles equidistant from Deering and Buckland and are used recreationally. Interviews should be conducted with Deering and Buckland residents to verify the existence of the hot springs, determine the location and potential for development. 3. Other hot springs and geothermal areas This author has heard mention of geothermal areas not identified on the 1983 map, such as sites along the Noatak river about 25 miles from Kotzebue, sites in the Igachik hills, and others. Interviews should be conducted with as many area residents as possible to verify such claims and collect data if it exists. Future Work Priorities At this point there is insufficient data to conclude much about the geothermal potential of sites in the NANA region, even at known hot springs. It is important to note that almost no data has been generated since the 1980’s. Theoretically, most of the known hot springs in the NANA region could be used for heat and/or power using a plant similar to the one recently installed at Chena Hot Springs (see www.yourownpower.com). However, all of the hot springs discussed in this report are significantly far from population centers (40 miles or further), making transmission costs the main barrier to geothermal development at this time. Future work should focus on identifying new geothermal prospects closer to potential users. The following steps are recommended: Pursue loose ends from literature review. Data from other wells in the region and satellite imagery were ordered and will be evaluated when they arrive. It could be necessary to acquire other low-cost datasets to refine interpretations, such as gravity datasets (unfortunately, digital gravity data is only available from the USGS for the conterminous U.S. and not for Alaska, but it may be available from proprietary sources). Like aeromagnetic maps, gravity maps cannot “see” geothermal resources; they can only aid in geologic interpretations. In volcanic regions, gravity is especially useful because “lows” can indicate areas of intense hydrothermal alteration of rocks, thereby providing indirect evidence for hydrothermal activity. However, CAHSB hot springs are small-scale, low-temperature features, and do not result in extensive alteration of the host rock, so this may not be useful. On the other hand, gravity data could be useful overlaid with aeromagnetic data to delineate concealed faults, locating the intersection of granitic plutons and faults, and other interpretations. 12
