AlthoughGuillaume et al.[192] used a radial-inflow turbine in their study, the turbine was developed using the components of truck turbochargers. Electric oil boiler was applied as the heat source as well. The coupling of a custom-designed radial turbine (and generator) on-engine to explore ORC WHR system performance is an area in which little available literature exists. To allow a realistic appreciation of the ORC system’s contribution to heavy-duty diesel engine, a coupling of ORC system with real engine is essential. Therefore, a test rig that contains an ORC thermal oil loop was built around anHDD engine and tested inthis chapter. From the engine point of view, part-load performance is seldom investigated in depth. Thus, this study focused on this topic. For this study, the engine was operated at 40% of its maximum power to target a representative, mean operating condition. The exhaust gas of a heavy duty diesel engine was applied as the heat source for the thermal oil loop. Subsequently, the oil exchanged heat with the ORC unit. 7.2 ORC Thermodynamic Definitions Used in the Experiment This section presents the experimental set-up tested and the principal theoretical expressions used in the definition of theperformance of ORC system and expander. Figure ‎7-1 presents the schematic of the ORC test rig. The working principal of the cycle is discussed in Section ‎3.3. The turbine is directly coupled to a high-speed, synchronous electric generator to convert the turbine mechanical power to electricity. In the test bench, a load bank is installed for the dissipationof electric power.
