2- THE DESIGN PROCESS: The radial turbine is a work-producing device that consists of moving and stationary parts. Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram for a radial turbine and its components. The turbine has a stationary component (stator) and rotating component. The stationary component is compromised of an annular ring called the volute and set of nozzle guide vanes. The rotating part which is the heart of the turbine called the rotor. Figure 1: Radial turbine components. The design process used in this work is comprised of three steps: the meanline (one- dimensional) design, geometry generation and performance and structural analysis using CFD and FEA tools. Turbine design is an iterative process, where iterations are needed between CFD results and preliminary design results and between the FEA results and geometry details. Figure 2 summarises the design process that is used in this work.This section briefly describes the design steps and provides details for the meanline design process, CFD and FEA setup are given in the following sub sections.
