In 2011, Graphite Energy developed a 3 MWe CSP plant in Lake Cargelligo in New South Wales, Australia, that used graphite blocks in the receivers on top of multiple towers. The graphite blocks in the receiver, irradiated by concentrated sunlight, served as both the storage system and boiler to generate steam for power production. EnergyNest, based in Norway, developed a concrete-based thermal energy storage system that consists of an array of modular pipes filled with concrete and steel tubes. The tubes carry heat- transfer fluid that can heat the concrete when charging and extract heat from the concrete when discharging to power a turbine/generator or provide process heating.
