As can be seen in Figure 3.13, although the total discharging time did not change notably with switching the flow direction, supplying cold HTF from the top of the container resulted in a longer phase change transition (maintaining the temperature at around 55°C). This might be due to the formation of weak natural convection currents causing the circulation of melted wax when the flow was downward (cooled liquid wax on the top of the storage unit is replaced by the hotter liquid wax rising from the bottom). Therefore, a more uniform temperature distribution was maintained.
