ANALYSIS & RESULTS 47 4.2 KEY FINDINGS: DATA ANALYSIS Our analysis of the Foundation Center data- base reveals that only a very small proportion of philanthropic funds dedicated to fighting climate change supports carbon removal solu- tions. The data show that from 2008 to 2014, philanthropies donated only an average of $0.8 million per year ($5.3 million total) in grants to carbon removal projects (0.3% of total cli- mate change giving) under the “dedicated” Figure 14. This amount increases to an average of $2.3 million per year ($15.8 million total) when including grants with the potential for carbon removal (1% of total climate change giving), and to an average of $13 million per year ($90.6 million total) when expanded again to include grants that could provide pathways for carbon removal in the future (5% of total climate change giving) (Figure 14 and 15).
