This module model can be used for RO (reverse osmosis), NF (nanofdtration), UF (ultrafiltration) and MF (microfiltration) with appropriate modifications. The overall material balances and boundary layer aspects are essentially the same for all these applications. The definition of the flux, membrane resistances, and the concentrations can be modified to suit the specific type of filtration. Therefore, these notes will begin with the specific flux models for the different types of filtration. Following that section, the overall material balance equations will be developed using the RO flux model and boundary layer estimation techniques. Finally, a sample design problem will be presented to illustrate how one can proceed. 11.2 Solvent Flux Models Figure 11.1 is a diagram of the dynamics of a pressure-driven filtration process.
