As expected, the performance (i.e. the amount of ions removed) of the prototype, holding applied current constant, improves as the flow rate decreases, since the residence time of the fluid in the prototype increases. I/z+c+eQ, where z+ is the charge number of the cation, c+ is the concentration of the cation, e is the elementary charge, and Q is the flow rate into the device. A ̃ semilog plot of c ̃ versus I, as shown in Figure 2-12, actually suggests that this master ̃ curve is approximately exponential (logc ̃ ≈ −0.619I). This unexpected collapse of data further corroborates the fact that it is advantageous to operate this system galvanostatically instead of potentiostatically, as discussed in the previous section.
