Chapter 3 Modeling of Shock Electrodialysis Prototype 3.1 Introduction Understanding which quantities govern the formation an propagation of deionization shocks is vital to optimizing the shock electroldialysis prototype. Over the past couple of years, models that aim to analyze the desalination shock phenomenon in various contexts have been developed. They first started with 1-D models in microfluidic channels [121, 68, 25] that were then extended to porous media [67, 23] and multiple dimensions [24]. For porous media in particular, the 1-D models have been fairly successful in providing scaling estimates for quantities such as the overlimiting con- ductance for porous media [23], despite containing numerous simplifying assumptions and ignoring effects, such as dispersion and electro-osmotic flow. Similar simplifying assumptions were made for the 2-D simulations done by Dydek et al [24], who as- sumed both simple Darcy flow through the porous medium and that the electrolyte is binary. Another interesting approach was taken by a postdoc (Ali Mani) in our group who derived a boundary layer solution for the 2-D problem. He assumed that he had plug-flow through the porous medium which was sandwiched between two electrodes (of length L) and that he had current flow perpendicular to fluid flow.
