Chapter 4 Perspectives of Shock Electrodialysis and Conclusions 4.1 Summary of Conclusions In the previous two chapters we have investigated a first continuous and scalable prototype for shock electrodialysis with the ultimate goal of showing that the use of desalination shocks is for water desalination and deionization is feasible. On the experimental side, we have built the first continuous and scalable prototype that uses shock electrodialysis for water desalination at a scale that far exceeds previous con- tinuous devices that all used microchannels. We showed that, unlike electrodialysis, shock electrodialysis can easily produce deionized streams of water, while also using fewer membranes. Furthermore, we found that electro-osmotic flows in the porous medium leads to increased water recovery, which, if controlled properly, can make this process even more attractive, though the process currently still has high energy demands and low current efficiencies. This new technology, while still in its infancy, shows great promise for niche industrial uses where very pure water is required and in applications in which trace amounts of ions need to be completely removed, such as in areas where water contains trace amounts of toxic ions. Furthermore, we have built an improved model for shock electrodialysis which is based on prior shock electrodialysis models.
