IbD PU Deliverable 3.1 1 Introduction 1.1 What is process intensification? Process intensification (PI) is an engineering strategy involving the design and implementation of innovative processing technology and techniques with the aim of achieving a significant reduction in the ratio of equipment size to production capacity (Moulijn et al., 2008; Reay et al., 2013; Microinnova, 2015). The history of PI dates back to the 1970s when Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) carried out a fundamental re-evaluation of the capital cost structure of its process plants, which resulted in the birth of the HiGee technology. This technology employs rotating devices to substitute the larger separation systems and was pioneered by Professor Colin Ramshaw (Ramshaw, 1983). 1.2 Classification of process intensification: equipment vs. methods PI development can be classified into two distinct areas: PI equipment and PI methods (refer to the following Figure 2). PI equipment include reactive and non-reactive apparatus. The former includes spinning disk reactors (SDR), static mixer reactors, monolithic reactors, micro reactors, rotating packed bed reactors (RPB), and jet impingement reactors. The latter includes intensive mixing devices for separation applications e.g. static mixers, rotor/stator mixers and rotating packed beds as well as heat transfer devices e.g. compact heat exchangers and microchannel heat exchangers. 1
