IbD PU Deliverable 3.1 1.5 The prospects of process intensification Process intensification has the capability to revolutionize chemical industries, as well as contributing significantly to other sectors. Nowadays, competition between industries is fierce with many countries allowing their economies to be more open (free trade agreements). Flow of technologies, products, markets, and human capital are freer than ever. Industries have realized that in order to survive, they must be at the cutting edge of innovation – hence, the proliferation of R&D in process intensification embarked upon by industries in recent years. The emphasis these days on sustainable processing and “greening” our process plants will undoubtedly drive the implementation of PI for years to come. It is therefore hopeful that PI research will be accelerated into maturity and be translated into prototyping and commercialization across several industrial sectors. 2 Objectives, scope, and outcomes of the review This paper reports on a state-of-the-art review of commercially-available PI technologies, as well as those that are under development. The scope is limited to solids handling PI technologies, making it fully compatible with the scope of IbD®. The main outcomes from the review are: 1. To make recommendations for the direction to be taken in a number of tasks within the IbD® project, especially for the PI case studies. 2. To inform the development of selected PI modules in the IbD® project (Tasks 3.2 to 3.6), which are rotating fluidized beds, spinning disks, miniaturized reactor technologies, and mechanically agitated technologies. 6
