IbD PU Deliverable 3.1 4 Rotating technologies Rotating technologies are those that involve either physical equipment rotation (i.e rotation of a surface or an enclosed volume) or rotation action of the processed fluid (gas/liquid/solid) in a static device. Physical equipment rotation includes the spinning disk/cone reactor, rotating packed/fluidized beds, rotor-stator reactor in the form of flat horizontal disks or concentric tubes, the mop fan/deduster, revolving drum reactor, and rotary electrolyzer. Rotation action of the processed fluid includes TORBED reactor and vortex reactor (swirling fluidized beds, rotating fluidized bed in static configuration). It is worth noting that applications in which the solid content of a process fluid poses fouling problems in conventional equipment can, in principle, be handled in rotating equipment as the rotating action provides a self-cleaning mechanism strong enough to shift most solid deposits away from the surface (Boodhoo and Harvey, 2013). 4.1 Spinning disk reactor The spinning disk reactor technology imposes high centrifugal acceleration, ac (where ac=2r) to liquids flowing on its surface. The fluid which is typically supplied at or near the centre of the spinning disk is rapidly accelerated to the local angular velocity of the disc surface and forms an extremely thin wavy film (typically ranging from 50-500 μm) (Boodhoo and Harvey, 2013), as shown in Figure 4. Figure 4. Thin wavy film on the spinning disk (Boodhoo and Harvey, 2013). Figure 5 shows the schematic of a typical SDR configuration, which is equipped with an internal heat transfer system to control the temperature of the processing liquid. Besides 8
