Silverson 150/250 rotor-stator mixer: Silverson screens (left) and Silverson blades (right) (Jasińska et al., 2014). 4.4.3 Spinning tube-in-tube The spinning tube-in-tube (STT) reactor started by Kreido Biofuels (Kreido has ceased trading now) is an important type of RSR in chemical processes. A typical STT is shown in Figure 21. The rotating inner cylinder (rotor) rotates at a very high speed, as fast as 12000 rpm typically, while the outer cylinder is fixed as a stator. The velocity difference between the rotor and stator generates very high shear stresses within the film in the narrow annular space which is typically of the order of 0.3-0.4 mm. This gives rise to rapid mixing between fluid streams, which can be exploited for fast chemical reactions. The high surface area per unit volume achieved from the thin film flow is also beneficial for enhanced heat removal from highly exothermic reactions. To date, there are no reported solids processing applications for the STT presumably because of the very narrow channels formed between the rotor and stator. Figure 21.
