IbD PU Deliverable 3.1 control the steady-state conversion and particle number only by varying the rotating velocity of the inner cylinder and exhibit very stable long-term operation without shear-induced coagulation and polymer deposition, as a pre-reactor for the continuous emulsion polymerization. The TCR has low shear-rate but effective mixing characteristic inside the fluid which makes it a good choice for suspended particles (Giordano et al., 2000). They indicated that the TCR can be used for transporting and processing solids through the annular section. A gentle vortex agitation was observed which caused no detectable damage to the suspended particles. The TCR had 150 ml volume filled with suspension of particles (10 g particles per 100 ml). The displacement of particles on the other hand was highly affected by the rotating speed of the inner cylinder and axial flow in the TCR. The particles were carried out of the reactor by the moving vortices in the WVF or by the upstream by-pass. Although this phenomenon may cause accumulation of particles and clogging at the reactor outlet, it is also indicative of the Taylor-Couette system’s potential for transporting and processing solids through the annular section. 4.5 Vortex and TORBED reactors 4.5.1 Vortex reactor A vortex reactor, which can also be called a rotating fluidized bed reactor in static configuration, shares the same working conception as the conventional rotating fluidized bed reactor but containing a static fluidization chamber where the rotating motion of the fluid comes from the tangential injection of fluidized gas through multiple slots on the wall of chamber. The fluidized gas is forced to leave the chamber via the chimney located in the centre of the chamber. Figure 24 shows a schematic of a vortex reactor (rotating fluidized bed in static configuration). 27
