IbD PU Deliverable 3.1 pressure of coating solution had little effect on agglomeration but a large effect on the overall coating efficiency. Figure 26. (a) Scheme and (b) picture of the vortex chamber with integrated spray nozzle (Eliaers et al., 2014). 4.5.2 The TORBED reactor The TORBED reactor, a type of swirling fluidized bed reactor, is a technique developed by Tortftech in 1980 which can be used for processing a wide range of materials. The reactor can provide precise, rapid, smaller scale, and lower cost solutions for industrial processing with a wide range of temperature. Being capable of dealing with almost any shape of feed solid and facilitating easy process gas recirculation, TORBED reactors are widely used by industries in Europe, Australia, North America, New Zealand, and Japan (Dodson, 1999). There are two types of TORBED reactor: the TORBED Compact Bed reactor (CBR) and the TORBED Expanded Bed Reactor (EBR). The compact TORBED reactor provides a higher rate of heat and mass transfer between gas and solid than any comparable process. The process gas is introduced to a compact shallow packed bed of particles suspended above an annular ring of stationary blades at a tangential angle in the CBR (Figure 27). The pressure difference between the high pressure process gas and low pressure of the bed forces the gas passing through the stationary angled blades and forming jets. A highly turbulent area is generated by the high velocity jets confronts the base of a shallow bed of particles, which can enhance the heat and mass transfer to that base layer – see Figure 28. 30
