IbD PU Deliverable 3.1 4.6 The mop fan/deduster The mop fan/deduster is a device which also utilises the Higee technique. The mop fan has a novel impeller inside the device to capture the particles as it rotates. In Figure 30(a-b), the mop fan device is compared with the conventional fan. The actual mop is also presented in Figure 30c. Figure 30. (a) A conventional fan; (b) the mop fan showing its internal structure; (c) the actual mop (Reay et al., 2013). The mop fan is used for particle collection, such as in air and water cleaning. Ma et al. (2008) modified the mop fan with an optical fibre mop installed in the fan and eight small UV lamps with a wave length between 300–370 nm installed in the fan casing for photocatalytic oxidation. In their study, the modified mop fan worked well for air cleaning and was more efficient than the normal mop fan with polymer mop. 4.7 Revolving drum reactor A novel revolving drum reactor, developed at the Austrian Solar Innovation Centre by Zettl et al. (2014), has been demonstrated in the experiment of sorption heat storage application. The aim of the project was to develop effective methods for thermal energy storage – in this case using zeolites for adsorption of heat. The revolving drum reactor designed in this study is shown in Figure 31. The advantages of the revolving drum reactor over other types of reactors for this type of application include high specific thermal power, very good controllability, low pressure drop inside the reaction bed, and high electrical coefficient of performance. 33
