IbD PU Deliverable 3.1 5 Mechanically agitated technologies In this section, the review of mechanically agitated technologies (MAT) is carried out. The PI equipment and methods involved include: oscillatory baffled reactors, Coflore flow reactor, impinging streams and mixer-settlers. 5.1 Oscillatory baffled reactors An oscillatory baffled reactor (OBR) can be defined generally as a plug flow reactor consisting of a tube or column fitted with a series of equally spaced, transverse baffle plates. Fluid inside the reactor is oscillated via installed diaphragms, bellows, or pistons at one or both ends of the tube. The relative oscillatory motion can be achieved by either oscillating the fluid (Figure 34A) or the baffles (Figure 34B) (Jian and Ni, 2005). This results in an eddy motion of fluid within the tube: the fluid accelerates and decelerates, usually following a sinusoidal velocity time function (Figure 35), in which the flow accelerates upwards or downwards, the vortices are formed downstream of the baffles. When the flow decelerates, these vortices are swept into the bulk fluid and subsequently unravel as flow decelerates in the opposite direction (Mohd Rasdi et al., 2013). Figure 34.
