It also can operate in batch or continuous mode. The baffles are usually orifice plates, also known as “doughnut” baffles (Figure 36). The fractional open cross-sectional area is usually in the range of 20-35% of the total area to minimize frictional losses and maximizing the mixing effect. The baffles are spaced at 1-2 column diameter (D) separation, with a spacing of 1.5D being the most common (Harvey et al., 2001; Masngut et al., 2010). Figure 36. The major advantage of OBRs is that they offer a means to perform reactions that require long reaction times (of the order hours) in a reactor with greatly reduced length to diameter ratio.
