IbD PU Deliverable 3.1 process is traditionally carried out via batch mode in industries e.g. the production of model active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) in pharmaceuticals. Lawton et al. (2009) have investigated the efficacy of using continuous processes in a conventional OBR for an API production. The increased specific area per volume for heat transfer plus the plug flow conditions in the OBR managed to reduce the residence time to a mere 12min from 9h 40min in batch mode. Greater morphology control was achieved as seen in Figure 38. The more uniform crystal shape leads to improved particle flow characteristics and filtration (NiTech, 2008). A NiTech Solutions® continuous (OBR) crystallizer was installed in Sanofi, Haverhill to synthesize an API for operation starting 2007. The volume occupied by the crystallizer was 99.6% smaller than the traditional approach of two 150 m2 stirred tank reactors (STRs) (Ni, 2015). Figure 38. Greater crystal morphological control is possible in a continuous OBR (NiTech, 2008). 5.2 Coflore® flow reactor Another enhancement over the conventional tubular reactors is the Coflore® flow reactor by AM Technology (AMT). Coflore reactors are multi-stage flow reactors that deliver excellent plug flow and mixing over a wide range of operating conditions. AMT offers this type in a variety of sizes, ranging from laboratory to industrial-scale applications.
