It consists of a continuous, helical, tubular wound tube (Figure 54). This design allows for an excellent heat transfer characteristics compared to straight tubular reactors. In the Helix reactor, secondary vortices exist that stabilize the flow of the liquid. This improves radial mixing and inhibits turbulence. This results in a near plug flow characteristic, which is very well mixed compared to a straight tube whilst operating under a much smaller pressure drop. The reactor design manages to avoid hot spot formation as well as enabling narrow residence time distribution. A successful polymerization was carried out in the reactor in which the gentle mixing imposed on an emulsion of methaxymethylacrylate prevented coagulation. The desired spherical polymer shape was also obtained. In another example, calcium carbonate was precipitated out from a concentrated solution (1M) of reactants. The results show a decrease in the precipitate particle size compared to a conventional straight tube reactor, which was a highly desirable effect (Figure 55) (TNO, 2015). 53
