IbD PU Deliverable 3.1 In the solid-gas system, ultrasonic can significantly the processing time, such as reported by Ozuna et al. (2014) who used ultrasound for different food drying in a solid-gas system. In the study, the drying time reduction of 32% in the case of cassava and 56% in the case of apple was achieved by applying the maximum ultrasound power (31 kW/m3). Drying time was also found to be shortened with increasing the ultrasound power, as shown in Figure 57. Figure 57. Experimental drying kinetics of cassava (A) and apple (B) cubes, applying different ultrasonic powers (Ozuna et al., 2014). 7.2.3 Anti-fouling Ultrasonic irradiation in a membrane distillation process on humic acid fouling mitigation was investigated by Hou et al. (2015). Ultrasonic waves could refresh the membrane surface which contained a dense humic acid fouling layer in order to alleviate the deposition. With the presence of ultrasonic irradiation (Figure 58), the relative permeate flux was maintained at 94% while the permeate flux went down to 76.3% in the absence of ultrasonic irradiation. Ultrasonic cleaning of fouling was found to be more effective than hydraulic cleaning (23% of flux recovery higher using ultrasonic method), both of which did not generate secondary pollution and cause damage to the membrane (Kan et al., 2016). 58
