Hydrophobic particles are attached selectively to small air bubbles which form a froth and are recovered through the overflow and then pass out in the underflow (Figure 65). This technique was tested in University of Stellenbosch on pyrite recovery from Witwatersrand quartzitic ore. Results have shown recoveries of 85-93% at grades of 35-40% sulphur with a residence time of a mere 1 second. In conventional batch flotation, average recoveries of up to 96% at a mean grade of 32.5% sulphur could be obtained only after 320 seconds. The ASH however, required three times as much collector dosage needed as in the conventional flotation cells (120g/t vs. 40g/t). Figure 65. Schematic diagram of the air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) (Van Denventer, 1998).  The Jameson Cell The Jameson Cell is a highly intensified froth flotation cell invented by Professor Graeme Jameson in University of Newcastle, Australia. Conventional mechanically-agitated cells suffer from low void fractions (5-10%) and large bubble sizes (5-10mm), which result in low interfacial areas and low probabilities of particle-bubble contacts. Similar problems occur in the conventional flotation columns, where the height is often increased to provide greater residence time in order to increase the probability of particle-bubble contacts.
