IbD PU Deliverable 3.1 Figure 69. Sharp classification of polystyrene powder in the EJAC (MatsuboCorp., 2009). 9.2 Grinding 9.2.1 Stirred-ball mill High speed stirred ball mills have been traditionally used for ultra-fine grinding. They are based on using loose, moving grinding media such as steel balls, which are moved by rotation of an axial stirring device. The important machine parameters include mill size, agitator design, grinding media properties, rotating speed, throughput, and operating regime. The relationship between particle charge or suspension stability and apparent viscosity is well documented. Bernhardt et al. (1999) studied the influence of solid concentration on the grinding results as well as the energy consumption (grinding efficiency) by varying the viscosity with additives. The experiment was carried out in a lab-scale stirred (wet) ball mill (Figure 70). The solid material used was limestone (< 10 μm) and the additive (surfactant) was sodium polyacrylate (SPA). SPA has been used widely in the paper industry to reduce the slurry viscosity of coatings. Their results showed that by increasing solid concentration, the energy utilisation initially increased to a maximum, and subsequently decreased due to the rising viscosity. SPA additives acted as the dispersing agent, which improved the charge of 73
