(2015a). 9.4 Drying Fluidized bed is a method of controlled, gentle, and even drying of wet solids (Figure 73). Groenewold and Tsotsas (2007) used the fluidized bed for the drying of γ-Al2O3 with particle diameters ranging from 50 to 1800 μm. The fluidized bed was equipped with a cylindrical heater. The drying curves of different particle sizes illustrated that the drying process was intensified with the heater on for every particle size, as shown in Figure 74 (horizontal axis representing the heater and bed cross-sectional area). These led to the conclusion that the drying process was successfully intensified by immersed heating elements in a fluidized bed reactor. 76
