Wet granulation has also been carried out in fluidized bed using side-spray nozzle with swirling air-flow. This has been reviewed in Section 4.5.1. 9.6 Integrated granulation and drying  Single pot processor A single pot processor is the term for a mixer/granulator that dries granules in the same equipment (Figure 79). The granulation is carried out in a normal high shear processor. However in this equipment, lumps formation must be avoided as they cannot be broken down prior to drying. The basic drying principle is the vacuuming of the bowl – this lowers the evaporation temperature of the granulation liquid. Heating is done via direct heating of the dryer walls. This heating method is most effective for small-scale, organic solvents, or low amount of binder liquids. To improve the vapour removal, stripping gas can be introduced from the bottom of the equipment, and it passes through the product bed. Currently, heating can only be done through the heated wall. This presents several limitations: linear scale-up is not possible, unsuitable for heat sensitive materials, and unsuitable for water as binder (water has a relatively high boiling temperature under vacuum and a high heat of evaporation, compared with organic solvents). This problem could be overcome with an additional source of energy such as microwave (Stahl, 2014). 84
