Figure 4. Process Intensification Equipment Despite the prominent position of the SDR, it has up to now, been hardly employed for large scale production. The SDR (Figure 5) allows high throughput while maintaining excellent heat transfer. The SDR shown in Figure 5 consists of a single thermostatted rotating disk enclosed in a cylindrical housing which is also thermostatted. SDR with multiple disks are available as are equipment having disks from 10 to 100 cm in diameter, which can rotate at speeds of up to ca. 6000 rpm. Usually the base material for the disk is copper; due to its excellent thermal properties but the surface of the disk can be made of many other materials depending on the reaction being carried out.
