Additionally, the surface of the disk may be flat or grooved to modify the flow of the material across the surface.[5,12] The reactants may be introduced onto the disk either centrally or at some point across the disk[13] and the housing can be either evacuated or held under pressure (with a gaseous reactant if required[14]). The chemical reaction takes place on the surface of the disc and, ideally, is completed on the cooled walls of the housing. In addition to the very favourable mass and heat transfer, the short residence times, the large centrifugal forces and the continuous nature of the process are further promising characteristics of this type of reactor. It should not go without mention that a SDR generally shows little tendency to fouling, has very low holdup and is thus relatively safe while it is extremely flexible and allows easy adjustment in the case of any disorder. Such a reactor is ideal for just-in-time production. Last but not least, the scale-up is trivial since it is determined solely by simple physical laws without recourse to the various operating numbers such as Prantl and Reynolds coefficients. A typical laboratory setup, which, without elaborate or particularly costly alterations, can be used for a continuous production of tons of product, is shown in Figure 6. The equipment consists of the SDR, the thermostats and the pumps for dosing the reactants. The SDR shown in Figure 6 has a disk with a diameter of 20 cm and fits easily into a standard laboratory fume cupboard. The Synthesis of Reactive Polyurethanes1 Figure 6.
