CHAPTER II BACKGROUND This chapter introduces the ideas and concepts required to understand the methods and results of this dissertation. In general, adsorption is a separation process that involves the attraction of molecules to an adsorbent surface based on its size or molecular interactions with the solid. This dissertation will focus on a specific adsorbent, LiLSX zeolite, and specific adsorption process, pressure swing adsorption, for the application of oxygen production from air. 2.1 Zeolites Zeolites are one of many adsorbents used for separation and purification processes. Adsorbents are microporous materials that permit mobility of adsorbate molecules (molecules that adsorb to an adsorbent surface) within the adsorbent and 5
