The other major energy consumption of the cycle is by the purge gas compressor, and is more critical because it is in the form of electrical energy input. The baseline case imposes a 100 kPa pressure drop across the microchannel. This pressure drop can be reduced to decrease the compressor power by reducing not only the specific volume change, but also the mass flow rate through the compressor. The reduced pressure drop, however, decreases the mass flow rate though the microchannel for all the stages, and not just for the purge stage.
