Fig. 5.8 indicates that the metal distribution is fairly sensitive to pH in the extremely acidic solution; however, beyond pH 7, as pH continues to increase, the metal distribution in the sink appears to be constant. The reason that the metallic elements could be mostly recovered in the acidic solution is that nothing could float because of the depressing effect at the lower pH. It is observed that there is no selectivity with Frother 70 alone. It is necessary to note that at the low pH, the sum of the float and the sink is significantly lower than the original feed mass, probably due to the reaction between the active metals (such as zinc and iron) and acids that are utilized to adjust the solution pH.
