Chapter 3: Experimental setups 4.4 Impact of oil mass fraction on performance In the tests presented previously, the oil mass fraction was maintained between 0.7 and 2.3 %. Additional tests were carried with larger oil mass fractions to investigate the impact of the oil quantity on the expander performance. Figure 29 shows the evolution of the expander overall isentropic Figure 29: Isentropic effectiveness vs. oil mass fraction effectiveness with the oil mass fraction (for a pressure ratio of 4.218±0.065 and a supply temperature of 92.0±1.5°C). It can be observed that the isentropic effectiveness decreases with the oil quantity. Further investigation is needed to identify with certainty the underlying reason (among suspects, the increase of the supply pressure drops or viscous losses). As shown in Figure 30, the filling factor correlates fairly well with the supply pressure and the oil mass fraction.
