Objectives: Figure 1. Delaminated PCBs through SCF treatment The objective of this research is to investigate and improve the recycling efficiency of printed circuit board (PCB) wastes through supercritical fluid treatment. The specific aims of this project are to: 1) investigate the advanced theory behind the SCF delaminating of PCBs to improve its application potential; 2) optimize the SCF treatment process to improve the delaminating efficiency of PCBs; 3) establish collaborations with Wisconsin electronics recycling industry on PCB recycling. Theoretical Background In this project, various kinds of printed circuit boards are subject to supercritical fluid CO2 treatment, which causes dissolving of PCB bonding materials between copper foils and polymeric layers. Then PCB scraps could be easily delaminated after the dissolving treatment. The thermodynamic model is described as follows: The thermodynamic model The thermodynamic modeling of solubility of various resins in SCF CO2 is proposed in the following format [7] and widely used by some researchers [8] [9] [10] [11]: Psat (P Psat )vS y i exp i i i F P RT (i =1, 2...N) (1) i Where subscript i stands for various kinds of resins in PCB substrates, yi is the solubility of resin i in supercritical fluid CO2 in unit of mole fraction,Psat and vs are the saturation pressure and molar volume of resin i , respectively. F is the fugacity coefficient of resin i in supercritical i fluid CO2 at pressure P and temperature T . R is the gas constant. To use equation (1) for calculation of solubility yi at certain pressure P and temperature T , information onPsat , vs and F is required. The values of Psat and vs can be obtained from the iii ii physical properties of a specific resin i [11]. F is usually calculated by using an appropriate i equation of state (EOS) [11].
