(NACA C-24930) serious deficiencies in design tools and regulatory criteria for aircraft that differed signifi- cantly from those of the 1950s, especially rotorcraft and the fixed-wing airplanes used by general aviation. Workshop participants had “sharply underscored an essential NASA role to accomplish the following objectives: update the applied technology to the current state of the art; develop and validate advanced analysis methods, test facilities, and icing pro- tection concepts; develop improved and larger testing facilities; assist in the difficult process of standardization and regulatory functions; provide a focus to the presently dis- jointed efforts within U.S. organizations and foreign countries; and assist in disseminating the research results through normal NASA distribution channels and conferences.” The workshop, Beheim concluded, had reinforced NASA’s growing awareness of the demands for renewed icing research. In view of this “obvious need,” NASA Headquarters had approved the reestablishment of an icing research section at Lewis.
