Chapter 5 Back in Business On the morning of 13 January 1982, Washington, DC, was in the midst of a major snowstorm that would dump 6 inches on the nation’s capital. Schools and businesses closed; Congress recessed early; and National Airport was shut down. By noon, as the steady snowfall gave way to scattered showers, the airport reopened. Just before 1:40 P.M., however, it closed again to allow plows to clear the instrument runway (18/36). It was scheduled to resume operations at 2:30 P.M. As the plows did their work, passengers boarded Air Florida flight 90, a Boeing 737- 222B, that was bound for sunny Ft. Lauderdale. Captain Larry Wheaton asked for de-icing as the seventy-four passengers, no doubt happy at the prospect of escaping the northern winter, found their seats. The de-icing was started, but then it stopped after Wheaton was informed that there would be a further delay, and that he would be eleventh in line for departure. At 3:00 P.M., the airplane was de-iced for 10 minutes. Thirteen minutes after that, Wheaton was cleared to push back from the gate. The tug, however, its tires spinning in the snow, could not move the Boeing 737. Wheaton sug- gested that he use the aircraft’s thrust reversers to gain some momentum. Although engaged for about 1.5 minutes, the reversers succeeded only in throwing up slush and snow. The aircraft remained immobile. Finally, a second tug, equipped with chains on its tires, managed to push back the 737. Palm 90, the aircraft’s call sign, then taxied out behind a New York Air DC-9 and became number seventeen in line for takeoff. A light snow continued to fall as Palm 90 waited to depart on runway 36. Finally, at 3:59 P.M., the control tower gave Wheaton clearance to take the runway. Visibility at this time was down to 0.25 of a mile. Seconds later, the tower gave Palm 90 permission to depart. As the aircraft reached rotation speed, the nose of the 737 pitched up sharply. “Forward, forward, easy,” Wheaton told copilot Roger Pettit. But the aircraft did not respond. “Come on. Forward, forward,” Wheaton exclaimed. “Larry, we’re going down,” copilot Pettit responded. “I know it,” were Wheaton’s last words, just before Palm 90 slammed into the 14th Street Bridge. 81PDF Image | History of NASA Icing Research Tunnel
