“We Freeze to Please” Figure 5–4. Inspecting IRT fan blades, 1979. (NASA C-79-324) university.10 Zumwalt was at first hesitant to become involved. He reminded Schmidt that he was an aerodynamicist who was familiar with wind tunnels, but that he had no background in electro-dynamics or structural dynamics. Schmidt, however, would not be fended off. In the end, Zumwalt agreed to explore the idea with the two individuals who had brought up the subject at the Advisory Committee meeting—David Ellis of Cessna 10 David Ellis, who was chief of advanced design at Cessna, has a somewhat different recollection of these events. He recalls that his first knowledge of the EIDI project was the result of a telephone call from Reinmann about this “Russian system.” Reinmann told Ellis that NASA had tried to interest Boeing, Douglas, and Lockheed in a joint project with NASA to develop EIDI, but they were not interested. Reinmann wondered if a general aviation manufacturer might wish to join such a project. Ellis told Reinmann that Cessna would indeed be interested. Ellis then contacted Zumwalt, who set up the WSU team. Leary tele- phone interview with Ellis, 1 September 2000. Zumwalt, however, responded to Ellis’s recollection in caps: “I AM QUITE SURE THAT I HEARD FIRST FROM SCHMIDT, THEN CONTACTED DAVE ELLIS.” Zumwalt to Leary, 23 May 2001. 88PDF Image | History of NASA Icing Research Tunnel
