“We Freeze to Please” Figure 5–6. The IRT Control Room, 1973. (NASA C-1987-473) NASA/WSU/industry consortium. More than 100 individuals from various companies, including all ten companies in the EIDI consortium, and government agencies attended the gathering. Zumwalt and his colleagues delivered a report on the program, displayed an EIDI-equipped Cessna 206, and invited participants to observe tests in the IRT. Throughout the day, the advantages of EIDI were highlighted. The system operated on low energy, caused no aerodynamic penalties, required minimum maintenance, and compared favorably in terms of weight and cost with existing de-icing systems. Cessna announced that it planned to apply in 1986 for FAA certification for the 206 with the EIDI system. “In all,” Reinmann concluded, “we believe that EIDI will prove to be a fea- sible system for application to all aircraft classes.” Hailed as the de-icing system of the future, EIDI never lived up to its promise (at least, to date). A combination of circumstances worked against the system. What might be viewed as an ill omen for the future took place three weeks after the symposium when Zumwalt fell through the ceiling of an underground cave while walking in a national park in California. He broke his back and would never walk again; although, he would continue to teach for seven more years before retiring. Cessna, which had been 92
