F-28 on 22 March 1992. The aircraft had been de-iced twice before leaving the gate at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, but 35 minutes had elapsed between the last de- icing and takeoff. The Fokker stalled after rotation and came to rest in Flushing Bay (at the end of the runway). There were twenty-seven fatalities in an accident that was given extensive publicity.6 Full Speed Ahead Figure 6–4. Fairchild SF340 in IRT, 1983. (NASA C-83-1160) 6 New York Times, 23 March 1992. Following this accident, Reinmann was asked to appear on a local TV show in Cleveland, together with a survivor of the crash. “I used some graphics and a model airplane to illustrate how ice buildup on the wings degrades aerodynamic performance and the consequences,” he recalled. “The next day, a captain from one of the major airlines called me from California, his home base. He said that he had watched the show while he was on a holdover in Cleveland, and he wanted me to know that it was the first time that he really understood how icing affected takeoff performance. He said that when he got on the air- plane he mentioned the show to his copilot, and he too had watched it and found it helpful. The captain talked to me for about an hour, telling me about his experiences in icing.” Reinmann to Leary, 22 April 2001. 111
