LEWICE was then delivered to NASA Lewis, where it underwent further development and extensions. LEWICE 1.0 was formally released to U.S. industry in May 1990.17 By the early 1990s, LEWICE codes had been validated through a wide range of con- ditions and were being used routinely by aircraft manufacturers during the certification process. For example, Richard Ranaudo, an experienced NASA test pilot, retired in 1998 to become manager of Canadair Flight Test at Bombardier Aerospace in Wichita, Kansas, and lead three certification and development programs for the Canadair Regional Jet Series. “Since joining ‘industry,’” he has written, “I’ve learned that NASA’s icing program in computational methodologies for ice shapes [has] been the biggest help in new aircraft development.”18 17 Leary interview with Robert J. Shaw, 26 June 2001. 18 Ranaudo to Leary, May 2001. 118
