“We Freeze to Please” Figure 8–3. Lightning strikes on radome in IRT, 1995. (NASA C-1995-4457) In all, there were eighty-four runs with the business jet model, forty-nine with the general aviation airfoil, and thirty-three with the commercial transport model. Because the IRT had a relatively high level of turbulence, the Modern Airfoils Program also included tests in Langley’s Low-Turbulence Pressure Tunnel (LTPT) to verify the performance measurements that had been made in the icing tunnel. The LTPT, a closed-loop tunnel with a test section that measured 3 feet wide by 7.5 feet high by 7.5 feet long, had a turbulence level of 0.1 percent or lower and could be operated at Mach numbers as high as 0.4. For the LTPT tests, the Lewis model shop fabricated a general aviation airfoil out of solid aluminum that had a span of 3 feet and a chord of 3 feet. The model was installed horizontally in the test section of the Langley tunnel. Selected artificial ice shapes were then attached to the model between the 10- and 14-percent chords by means of flathead screws. The screws were covered with dental plaster and then smoothed to match the sur- rounding surface. After the instrumentation was checked, the tunnel was pressurized and 154
