In April 2001, the first ice-protected RQ-1Bs commenced operations from Macedonia’s Petrovec airport, flying surveillance missions over the southern Balkans.18 NASA’s Predator ice-protection program, Reehorst observed, was unique because of the speed with which the system went from concept to reality. The project again demonstrated the icing branch’s ability to respond promptly to urgent military requirements.19 As the IRT approached its 50th anniversary, it was clear that the heavily used tunnel needed major modifications if it were to continue as a world-class research facility in the 21st century. In 1993, NASA-Lewis contracted with Sverdrup Technologies for a study of what changes would be necessary to upgrade the IRT.
