Outside requests for use of the facility are greater than ever, and there is a backlog of nearly two years. A decision by Boeing to shut down its icing tunnel will only increase the competition for IRT time. Pressure on the aircraft industry to develop new regional transports will generate significant work for the tunnel. Demands to investigate large droplet icing continue. The rotorcraft industry’s search for ice-protection systems means work for the IRT, as does all-weather require- ments for unmanned reconnaissance vehicles. NASA will continue to develop new protection technologies and improve computer prediction codes.
