The dual rail cycle offers a flexible method to accommodate the variation in fluid heat capacities, creating an excellent match of temperature glide in all the recuperator and external heat exchangers, and therefore providing high overall cycle efficiency. Note that subcritical steam-based systems do not share this characteristic, since the constant temperature boiling process inevitably leads to a significant loss in thermodynamic availability. The design of modern heat recovery steam systems partially compensates for this loss by dividing the system into multiple pressures, which adds cost and complexity.
