1.3 Context within General System Design Process Figure 1-3 shows the framework of a generic Product Development Process (PDP)5 . This process, being presented at a very high level ofabstraction, does not attempt to represent the magnitude of relative effort or iteration that occurs within each major step. These will vary with the particular project being undertaken. Suffice it to say, however, that in the gas turbine engine business, significant iteration usually occurs during the Requirement Definition, Design, and Development phases due to system complexity and resulting uncertainty in the performance and integration aspects of the modules, subsystems and components. Figure 1-4 represents a revised PDP showing the additional steps proposed in this work. During the Requirement Definition phase, the risk level for each control system component is assessed. The methodology for assessing component risk is discussed further in section 5.1. Components having a sufficiently high risk level (which must be determined locally based on the program manager's threshold) will, ifpossible, delay detailed definition ofthe design feature in question, or potentially the entire component if definition of this feature is critical to defining the component's architectural layout. Generic Test Apparatus (GTA) hardware must be procured to provide subsystem and engine test with the functionality of the component being delayed. This is described further in section 5.2. Data from initial subsystem and/or engine test are then acquired and fed back into the development process to refine requirements and reduce uncertainty, hopefully resulting in a component detailed design that is very close to optimum. 5 Crawley, E.
