Figure 1-5 represents the "System Vee" model for the General Product Development Process6 . The left side of the model shows the design phase starting from the upper left with Identification of Product Need, proceeding down the Vee with Product Planning, Concept Development, System Design, and Detailed Design. This process conforms to the classical system design methodology of decomposition in which the product design emerges through progressive steps of definition and refinement from the system level down to the piece-part level. Ofnote is the iterative Simulation process that exists between the Preliminary Design and Detailed Design steps. Particularly for complex systems with highly interactive elements, simulation is often a necessary activity to efficiently explore the design space and make trade- offs between competing requirements and attributes. Thomke describes the importance of simulation with the example of BMW7. Only a few years ago, experimenting with novel ideas to improve vehicle crash survivability was an expensive and time consuming proposition since this required the construction of physical prototypes. The feedback loop stretched over months of time creating a barrier to innovation for designers. Data was acquired too late to influence early decision-making in the product development cycle, which sometimes resulted in expensive changes just prior to full production. Today, crash tests are performed in a virtual computer environment allowing the design team to rapidly evaluate many different configurations before key design decisions need to be made. The company is able to better understand not only what works, but why.
