selected over a hydraulic system if the technical trades (i.e. product cost, weight, reliability, etc.) show a benefit and the current state of technology maturity indicates an acceptable level of risk. Due to the safety criticality of aerospace propulsion systems, customers are typically risk-averse (some more than others). Accordingly, the state of component/system technology maturity and the historical success of similar product architectures play a significant role in the control system concepts selected for a particular application. Elements of complexity and uncertainty are again involved in a customer's risk-aversion due to the complex processes and interactions associated with the gas turbine engine operating environment (complicated flow regimes, difficult-to- predict vibration signatures, and wide ranges of thermal extremes). These levels of complexity and uncertainty coupled with the long design/manufacture cycle time for most aerospace components (normally 12-18 months) will normally result in selection of somewhat conservative concepts that are backed up by hard data or field experience. Corporate strategy can influence concept selection, particularly if use of the concept might result in increased marketability, product differentiation from the competition, or a streamlining of the company's product line to reduce costs through economies of scale. In today's challenging economic environment, technical innovation, even for high-tech aerospace systems, is taking a back seat to product cost as the key product differentiator. This has driven companies to increasingly utilize common platform architectures to improve cost performance. In some instances, customer expectations can also drive concept selection, primarily in two ways: 1. Customers using legacy products have usually made a significant investment in support equipment and training of their support personnel. These customers will invariably attempt to influence concept selections to minimize the impact in these areas unless significant benefits are projected.
