Other attributes that are not closely coupled to hardware implementation such as reliability, safety, and vulnerability are defined mainly as goals to be superior to previously fielded systems. For example, reliability and safety goals for the Air Force F-22 fighter propulsion control system are set higher than the system they intend to replace, namely the Air Force F- 15 fighter. 1.3.3 Requirements Definition 1.3.3.1 Identification of Control System Component Functionality Based on the propulsion system and control system concepts selected in the earlier step, an architecture is identified which will satisfy the functional requirements. For the control system, a functional schematic is developed at this point, which serves to allocate functionality to components. Continuing with the previous example of the actuation system, actuation effectors, power source, and connectivity are schematically defined. For an electromechanical actuation system, this might include a generator, power distribution and control harnesses, electronic control, and various actuators. For a hydraulic actuation system, the generator is replaced by a pump and power distribution harnesses are replaced by plumbing. It is at this point in the process that the majority of product cost and weight are locked in. For this reason, the previous step of Concept Selection is extremely critical in meeting low cost and weight objectives. 1.3.3.2 System Design This thesis is focused on this step of the general design process.
