* An electro-mechanical actuator that develops force by rotating a ball-screw mechanism with an electric motor. Both concepts map their forms (which are substantially different) to the function of developing a force to position a bell crank or similar kinematic linkage which, in turn, positions the target mechanism such as variable compressor stator vanes or variable exhaust nozzle flaps. Concept Development Process [Ulrich & Eppinger, 2000] Quantified target specs for key control system attributes at this point are very difficult to define since most of the key spec attributes (e.g. product cost, weight, reliability, safety, vulnerability, etc.) are allocations derived from the propulsion system requirement. Pratt Whitney has used several methods in the past to define these allocations, but they are primarily based on similar products from the company's product line, usually with some incremental "challenge" for improvement.
